A Garden That Feels Like It Has Always Been Here

THE BRIEF

Not every garden needs to start from scratch.

When we first visited this courtyard, it already had something worth keeping. Mature trees gave the garden structure, and a stack of old London stock bricks hinted at its history. Rather than clearing everything away, we saw an opportunity to build on what was already there.

The brief was simple: create a peaceful woodland garden that felt natural, settled and full of life, while making the most of the existing character of the site.

OUR APPROACH

The mature trees became the backbone of the design.

Layered woodland planting creates texture, movement and seasonal interest beneath them. Existing London stock bricks were carefully lifted and reused throughout the garden, while self-binding gravel was chosen for the paths to create a softer, more natural feel underfoot.

Together, these reclaimed materials help the garden feel rooted in its surroundings rather than newly constructed.

Every decision was made with the future in mind — a garden that would continue to settle, evolve and become more beautiful with every passing year.

CRAFTSMANSHIP

Much of this project was about restraint.

Instead of replacing perfectly good materials, we reclaimed and repurposed them. Every brick was cleaned, sorted and laid by hand.

The flowing paths were carefully shaped to slow movement through the garden, creating a series of spaces that gently reveal themselves as you explore.

It’s craftsmanship that’s designed to feel effortless, even though every detail has been carefully considered.

THE PLANTING

The planting takes its cues from natural woodland.

Trees, shrubs, grasses and shade-loving perennials were layered together to create a garden that changes throughout the seasons while providing food and habitat for wildlife.

Rather than relying on individual feature plants, the aim was to create a connected living landscape that will continue knitting together as it matures.

THE OUTCOME

Today, the garden feels calm, immersive and established.

The reclaimed materials sit comfortably alongside the planting, while the mature trees provide an instant sense of permanence. As the seasons pass, the planting will continue to fill out, bringing even more texture, colour and wildlife into the space.

It is a garden designed to grow more beautiful with time.
